Story Challenge – Letter P – Polar Bear

I’m not sure this Polar Bear is still on exhibit.  He was old when this photo was taken in 2007.  When they get older the zoos will usually keep them in an area not visible to the public.  Even Polar Bears are allowed to retire.

A-Z Archive Challenge – The letter W

Once again I appreciate the fact that these photos are supposed to come from our archives.  It gives me an opportunity to revisit photos from the past and brings back many wonderful memories.  If you would like to see more examples of the A-Z Challenge click the red button.

The “W” that kept appearing in my archive was Walkway.  So I have included a few.

The photo above was taken in Newport, RI.  It was one of those beautiful days that can only be seen at the ocean.  Everything blue with splashes of sunshine.

This photo was in the Carolinas.  So many special memories there.

One of my oldest and also one of my favorite photos.  I was standing in one of those lifts that electrical repair workers use to repair the high/hot wires.  This one was fully extended right next to the marsh…. a light wind would have blown us over.  I am not so brave now.

This walkway is in Wilmington, NC.  The island beyond is Wrightsville Beach.  And there are two more W’s  Wrightsville and Wilmington!

Now to start searching for the X archives….

A-Z Challenge – V

So I’m a few days late.  Life has been busy.  Now to the V and where to go to see more of the same.  This is a challenge hosted by Flickr Comments by Frizztext and you will want to go and see more examples of V.

V is for vegetable and one of my favorite places to take photos – a farmer’s market.

Brussels sprouts – never tried them… probably never will… I think they look cute, but not at all appetizing.

Now peppers I love.  Raw or in a fajita or anything… so good.

If I recall correctly, these photos were taken at a farmer’s market in the Chicago burbs.  My sister in law, Chris, would know for sure… that is her stomping grounds.  She just called and told me it was the French Farmer’s Market in Wheaton, IL.

And finally the pumpkins!
Vegetables!

A-Z Archive Challenge – Letter U

Ugh!  The letter u!  What to do?  This is tough, Fritz!  I’ve been thinking about it all weekend.  Even at work I found myself looking around trying to think of things that begin with U.  For those of you who would like to join in on the fun (torment!) get  the details at Fritz’s place and join in.  For the most part it is a good time.  I have not yet looked at any submissions by others.  I want to figure this out.  All that pops in my mind is Unicorn and … welll… haven’t seen any around lately.  So, I must get creative or philosophical….ugly…. that wouldn’t be nice. Uruguay … a map?  uterus… lol … I really don’t think so.  Uppity?  Udders?  Upholstery?  boring,  This is hard!!!!!

Unforgotten

A-Z Archive Challenge – S

I have enjoyed taking part in two different photo challenges – 1) Weekly Photo Challenge and 2) A-Z Archive Challenge.  Both of these have afforded me the excuse to ramble through the archives kicking up ,memories and smiles.  So the letter S:

S is for Squirrel.  Fun to watch but deadly destructive when they break through your attic.  They are not welcome visitors in our yard or our home.  I prefer to enjoy them in the yards of others.

S is also for statue or sculpture.  This one is located in Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina.

S is also for sad… or at least trying to look sad so grandma will feel sorry for him.  My only brown eyed grandchild and he knows how to use them.

And finally, S is for stripes…. or maybe stairs (he’s standing right next to them) or how about smile!  S stands for so sorry for all the gratuitous grandchildren photos, but you have to sneak them in when you can.

OOOpps!  So sorry… I just read the small print that said one photo!  Aaahhh… next week I promise.

A-Z Archive: R! Challenge

This challenge is by way of Flickr Comments by Frizz Text.   Every Tuesday a letter is picked and my understanding is that the participants are supposed to go through their own photo archives to find subjects that begin with that letter.  Mine was easy.

R is for Rhino!

I looked very hard for some of my more unusual shots of these critters.  We have three of them here at the zoo.  They really have very funny personalities…. seriously.

One morning I was watching the rhinos when a trainer walked three elephants along one of the zoos back paths behind the rhino enclosure.  He was taking them to an audience interaction.  The rhino knew right away that people were watching the elephants and it stamped it’s sizable hoof and started prancing/pacing back and forth in front of us to get the attention back on him/her.  As soon as it knew we had switched back he/she stopped and continued to stand without moving again.  What a baby!  Didn’t not like sharing the limelight.

I couldn’t find the photo I like the most.  It was of all three of them lined up with their bottoms facing the camera.  Total disdain and contempt.

They are really fascinating animals.  It is a shame they are hunted down and slaughtered for their horn.  It is scary that I think these rhinos are better off in a zoo than they are out in the wild.  It shouldn’t be that way.
